Between Attempts
This is our entry for the D2 Challenge N°19, Pigment to Pixel, titled Between Attempts.
We reimagined Vilhelm Hammershøi’s Interior with Young Man Reading (c. 1898). Like much of Hammershøi’s work, the original captures solitude and quiet contemplation within an interior stripped to its essentials, where stillness itself becomes the subject.
In our interpretation, the young man becomes a composer caught between creative attempts suspended in that familiar loop of uncertainty. The sparse room remains, but it now carries the weight of iteration rather than calm detachment. The scattered sheets on the floor tell the story.
This piece resonated deeply with us during its creation, reflecting an experience common to many digital artists: working in solitude, repeating the process, and pursuing an idea that remains just out of reach. The quiet interior becomes a metaphor for that mental space between what fails and what finally resolves.
(Unironically, this mirrors exactly how we felt while refining this competition entry.)
